Treating Pigmentation

Pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation is the discolouration of the skin.  Usually recognised as darkened patches, marks or spots on the skin.  They vary in size and shape, are flat and commonly range from light brown to black in colour.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an excess production of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its colour. It’s produced by skin cells called melanocytes, which are located in the bottom layer (stratum basale) of the skin's epidermis.

While there are several conditions or factors that can alter the production of melanin in your body; hormone imbalance, inflammation or trauma to the skin as well as excessive sun exposure tend to be the most common culprits in causing pigmentation.

Hormone Imbalance
This type of pigmentation is called Melasma and is usually triggered by a change in hormones (estrogen and progesteron).  Women who are pregnant, who take the oral contraceptive pill or who are on hormone replacement therapy or IVF are more likely to suffer from hormone induced pigmentation.

Post Inflammation/Trauma
Trauma or skin inflammation caused by psoriasis, eczema or severe acne can increase the production of pigments to the skin.

Sun Damage
To protect itself from damaging effects of the sun, your skin increases its production of melanin.  The extra melanin makes your skin look darker or sun-tanned. In some cases, however, the sun causes an uneven increase in melanin production which produces irregular colouring (pigmentation) of the skin.

At Masque Day Spa we offer a range of treatments and products to combat hyperpigmentation.

CatioVital: This treatment stimulates cellular activity through dynamic ionisation. Specific gels are infused to inhibit melanin production on a cellular level while brightening the skin's surface.
